No dice
My parents brought a new game with them when they came to visit last week. Six dice and an index card in a Zip-Loc baggie may not look like much, but the grade schoolers in our family are enthralled. The game's name is Farkle. There are no limit to the number of players, and the goal is to get to 10,000 points (but then everyone else gets a chance to roll one last time to beat that score). Each time you roll the dice, you must get some points or your turn ends. I'll list the scoring below. If you do not get any points on a roll, you loose all the points you'd accumulated that turn. The ease of the game belies the (limited) strategy of knowing when to stop rolling.
Each 1: 100 points
Each 5: 50 points
3-1s: 300 points
3-2s: 200 points
3-3s: 300 points
3-4s: 400 points
3-5s: 500 points
3-6s: 600 points
4 of a kind: 1,000 points
5 of a kind: 2,000 points
6 of a kind: 3,000 points
straight (meaning 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6): 1,500 points
3 pairs: 1,500 points
2 triples: 2,500 points
Remember to move your current points off to the side after each roll. And if you get none of the points listed above on a roll, your turn ends.
Let me know what you think. Its the family fave out here.
