Affordable Public Option

A total of 28 senators - including both from New Mexico - introduced a proposal stating there must be a public health care option in any reform bill.  The question is will that option be affordable for the millions of uninsured Americans.

NPR ran a story this morning on the topic.  Here's an excerpt:

...Someone making two times the poverty level, or about $22,000 a year,in the House bill would get "something like a $500 deductible plan," hesays. "On the other hand in that same range in the Senate ... now we're talking a $2,500 deductible plan."

Gruber says he's a "big believer" in the concept that people should pay more for their health care so they'll know what it really costs and have an incentive to save money. "I'm a believer in consumer skin in the game," he says. "But a$2,500 deductible is a lot to ask for someone making $22,000 a year."

Many people without health care are self-employed or work for a company that does not offer health insurance.  Clearly, the self-insured are paying a much greater portion of health car costs than employer-based plans.

New Mexico has an extremely high level of uninsured people.  Can our senators fundamentally change that?
