St. Paul's Lagrein Rose
When I think of pink wine, I immediately think of that syrupy big box awfulness my parents drank when I was a kid. I have to admit I was afraid of the stuff.
When Susan (of Susan's Fine Wines and Spirits in Santa Fe) suggested a blush for our turkey, I wasn't really excited. I almost turned her down on principle. She explained this Italian wine ($12) has a white wine start - citrus, mellow fruits - and a red wine finish - clean and faintly tannic. I knew I had two other options to try, so I grabbed the bottle before I could change my mind.
Yes, it's nice. It paired well with the turkey. I felt the Macon-Villages was a stronger partner, but this was a very light, easy drinking alternative. It did not, however, change my mind radically about blush wines. I may purchase another - sweeter - version for deserts, but rose is never going to be in my fave five.
