Macon-Villages Old Vine Chardonnay (2007)

Because of familial scheduling, Thanksgiving came early to our house this year.  Snow was already on the ground and roasting a turkey and apples just seemed to fit the weather.

To ensure a lovely dinner, I went to Susan's Fine Wine & Spirits off St. Francis.  I was even able to speak with Susan.  Lovely lady.  I've never learned all the intricacies of French vintages; Susan - knowing that while I'm adventurous, I'm much more comfortable with Aussie and domestic bottles - suggested this wine.

I'd never had an old vine Chardonnary before.  Old vine zin is my absolute favorite.  So this intrigued me.  I also have to say I am not a buttery Chardonnay fan, which coats the tongue and makes the rest of the dinner less enjoyable.  I was pleasantly surprised with with this.

Macon-Villages is aged in steel, not oak, vats.  Instead of that thick coating, I tasted some light citrus and lots of mellow botanicals.  This wine was soft, rounded and very easy to sip alone.  It went fabulously with my apple cider turkey and the Fuyu persimmon appetizers.  Definitely worth drinking again, and at $13 a bottle, it's relatively easy on the budget.  Gotta love that in a good bottle of wine.
