So I cheated
I admit it. I like junk food. Well, some junk food. Namely french fries. They're just so....American. We were supposed to have burritos last night. I had the whole wheat tortillas and the salsa all ready to go. Then I got a burger-and-fries craving. Big time.
My grass-fed ground chuck became sliders, those little tiny burgers. I didn't have any buns small enough so I used my baguette. White bread with no nutritional value. The sliders were so GOOD. I made fries, too. At least I attempted to make the relatively good for you kind - Alexia's julienne style with sea salt. Baked, not deep-fried. Hey, there are worse varieties out there. Still, as a dinner goes, it was not bursting with vitamins and antioxidants.
To rationalize my semi-frequent fall from the health food wagon, I try to remember that when I make these items at home, they do not have as much fat. That's good. But fresh fruits and vegetables are better. So are whole grains. We know this, yet somehow we (OK, fine, I) revert back to my childhood days of fast food cravings. And it tastes really, really good.
