Penfold's Koonunga Hill Shiraz/Cabernet
Last night I made baby back ribs. I don't make these often because I have to make a special BBQ sauce for them: root beer is the secret ingredient.
On a whim, I purchased this Koonunga Hill bottle. I was in Sunflower Market - my first time - and it was on sale for $6.99. I figure any wine that scores an 85 on Wine Spectator is worth a try. Especially if it's under 10 bucks. This wine has some nice berry notes, but what I really like is the hint of chocolate. I think the flavor blends well with the carmelized root beer. Another option is barbecue chicken sandwhiches. I like to use dark meat because the richness is a nice balance to the oakiness.
I'm a sucker for Aussie reds. I like to serve these relaxed bottles with most barbecue because the wines tend to be easy with big personality - a lot like my Aussie friends.
