Buffalo butter
Last week I had something I haven't tasted in years: butter. Most of you are currently asking, "What's the big deal?" For us, butter has been a taboo food for nearly six years. My kids can't eat cow's milk, and, sadly, Earth Balance is simply not butter. (By the way, Smart Balance has whey, so anyone looking to avoid cow's milk should avoid this product; Smart Balance Light does not have whey. Perhaps you'll think it tastes remotely like butter.)
As I mentioned yesterday, Whole Foods has become my grocer of choice. One of the reasons is Fattorie Garofalo Burro di Bufala. Never heard of it? Neither had I until two weeks ago. It's a butter made from buffalo milk. It is more fattening than Earth Balance, but for certain occasions, nothing beats a pat of real, creamy butter. For those of you who are interested, it's located in the speacialty case. It's a bit pricey, $3.99 for 125 grams, but nowhere near as expensive as the goat's milk butter. For those of you with a cow's milk sensitivity, buffalo butter might just be the treat you've been seeking.
